Have you ever wondered about how you got here, like where you are in life right now? I read a book back in 2010 that was life changing for me. Start Where You Are is authored by Chris Gardner whose life was thrust into the fore front through the movie Pursuit of Happyness which starred Will and Jaden Smith. I won’t give the book away….meaning you really ought to read it, but I will share what I found so pivotal for me. Mr. Gardner through out a gavel in my midst of thinking. I argued within myself after I read his words with statements like “but what about what they did” and “did you see what happened to me” as well as many more. When the dust settled and the air was no longer as thick with the heat that came from each powerful account that exited from my mouth the truth was still there, starring me down, unwavering and yet inviting. The invite was to freedom. Freedom to have the life I longed for;freedom to change;freedom to be free. The words that were offered by Mr. Gardner were this: “you are where you are because you drove there”. I was stopped short at the first reading of this statement. Then I was defensive as the statement seemed to gain height, breadth and an over-powering weight. Is this book, this author, these words accusing me of being the cause of my calamity? I now have a sense of righteous indignation. And then it happens~like a flood I am on instant replay of so many event in my life. A compilation of what has made me happy, sad, despondent and exhilnthused. It is all there and slowly the trickle of realization of what Mr. Gardner is actually saying lays over me like a billowy down blanket (without the feathers sneaking out and poking me). I am free to change the trajectory of my life and have the power to do so by putting my hands back on the driver’s wheel. My big Ah-Hah was that everything that happened up to that point was all true but I have always had a say and the ability to make change. Overcoming my fears of self, others and “what ifs” have often stood in my decision making, action taking way. Certainly those things still may come up and as I’m sipping my black/white mocha with a shot of peppermint I can think of a few. Yet I am reminded of the internal God-given strength that I have to overcome those fear thoughts so that I can travel down my path, stronger and strengthening as I power through. In those actions I am free. So, that is my point. My mountain peak moment is that it’s my choice to walk in freedom regardless of the fog that shows up, the circus monkeys that get let loose or if someone thought it was my job to clean up their mess.
